Bound green paper over boards with simple gilt dec spine very faded, surface of green paper rubbed away on all edges as well as numerous spots on spine and covers--cloth shows through underneath paper, green endpapers, with modern bookplate of M.S. Carothers on front paste-down endpaper, top page edges gilt, other page edges untrimmed, previous owners signature on front flyleaf. Internally quite nice and clean, covers with more than normal wear.

Large paper quarto. Bound green paper over boards with simple gilt decoration, spine very faded, surface of green paper rubbed away on all edges as well as numerous spots on spine and covers--cloth shows through underneath paper, green endpapers, with modern bookplate of M.S. Carothers on front paste-down endpaper, top page edges gilt, other page edges untrimmed, previous owners signature on front flyleaf. Internally quite nice and clean, covers with more than normal wear. Pagination: (1) half-title, (2) blank, (1) color frontispiece, (1) title, (1) copyright, (1) dedication, (1) blank, ix-x Forward, xi-xiii program, (1) blank, (1) Characters, (1) blank, ((1) scenes, (1) blank, (1) half title, (1) 1 blank, [3]-150pp, (1) limitation & signatures, (1) blank.. Or just: (18), 150, (1)pp. 1 color frontispiece, 11 full page illustrations plus 33 woodcut illustrations mostly at chapter headings & endings. Last printed page reads: "This large paper edition, the first to contain both the text of the play and the spirituals, has been produced at the Lakeside Press, under the direction of William A. Kittredge. It is limited to five hundred and fifty copies, signed by Mr. Connelly and Mr. Jones. Number 34." The number "34" is penned in with red ink and the signatures of the author and illustrator below. Regarding the illustrations, the Foreword begins: "It will be obvious to anyone who inspects this book that it is less a handsome edition of "The Green Pastures" with illustrations by Robert Edmond Jones than it is a collection of Robert Edmond Jones' drawings accompanied by the text of the play. It is a happy experience for the author to find his work in such magnificent company."

Letter addressed to Mr. J.L.M. Curry, Room 3, Kellogg Bldg., Washington, D.C. Signed: "Edward B. Hodge" Corres. Secty. "As you ask particularly as to the location of schools for the colored race in the south, I would refer you for detailed information to the Rev. E.P. Cowan, D.D., #516 Market Street, Pittsburgh, Penna., who is Corresponding Secretary of the Board for Freedmen... An important Presbyterian institution for the education of colored men is Lincoln University, situated near Oxford, Chester Co., Penna. It has a collegiate and theological department..." Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry (1825-1903) statesman, author, educator. Probably best known for his life long efforts for public education in the South.
