'Reverend Sir, We, the undersigned, beg leave to urge upon you very seriously the importance and necessity of obtaining the signatures of your parishioners to a petition, headed by yourself, to the Lower House of Convocation of Canterbury... in favour of maintaining the Athanasian Creed in its integrity in the Public Service of the Church." Early Hawaiian Mission Imprint, Oahu, 1832: "Catechism of the Ancient History of God, to be Taught to Children." With Presentation by the Translator.

HE UI no ka Mooolelo Kahiko a ke Akua. he mea eao aku ai i na Kamalii. Oahu: Na Na Misionari I Pai. 1832. 9.6 x 13.7 x 0.35cm. $675.00

"The text, taken by Samuel Ruggles (Dibble) from the book of Genesis, contains 12 numbered sections of questions and answers. It was issued with printed wrappers; the title repeats on the front, and the back wrapper has a caption title "No Ka Hele Ana i ke Kula Sabati," followed by eight numbered paragraphs. The printed minutes of the June 1833 General Meeting record an edition of 10,000 copies."--David W. Forbes: Hawaiian National Bibliography 1780-1900, Vol. II, item #815.

The Hawaiian mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) had its beginnings in 1820 when a company of missionaries sailed for Hawaii, lead by Hiram Bingham. "With abundat courage and an inflexible will, yet cheerful, good-natured, and highly capable, he was from the beginning the natural leader of the mission (caricatured as Abner Hale in James Michner's novel Hawaii).... The phenomenal success of the mission due in considerable part to the role he and his wife, Sybil, played in winning the strong allegiance of the principal chiefs. [She] did much to bring the powerful regent Kaahumanu and others to the Christian faith. Hiram, too, won the allegiance of Hawaiians, but his forcefulness not only brought him into conflict with foreigners who resented missionary interference with their commercial, political, and sexual interests, but also irritated collegues... He helped create a writing system for the Hawaiian language, translated several books of the Bible, and produced Elementary Lessons, First Book for Children, Scripture Catechism, First Teacher, and a hymn and tune book."--Gerald H. Anderson: Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions, (c1998) p.63-64. Samuel Ruggles and his wife Nancy sailed with the first company of missionaries to Hawaii which also included the printer Elias Loomis. They spent 15 years at the Hawaiian Island working as teachers. Ruggles also translated the Catechism on Genesis, with some help from Sheldon Dibble--another missionary who arrived in the fourth company of missionaries, as a 22 year old, as a 22 year old.

Bound in printed wrapper pasted to blank sheet, side-stitched, two small 19th century library or shelf number tags on left side of front wrap, chipped at spine with loose ends pasted back down, inside of front wrapper repaired at hinge with strip of archival paper, front wrapper chipped at bottom outside corner and top edge, damp stain down left side of front wrapper, light to medium foxing.

Library blind stamp on bottom outside corner of first and last three pages, there is a 4 digit stamped accession number on the verso of the title page, 19th century printed bookplate of the "Library of the Theological Institute of Connecticut," above this bookplate is written in 19th century hand "Presented by the Rev. Mr. Ruggles"--this is highly likely the translator, Samuel Ruggles, mentioned above.
