Collation: 4 unsigned leaves, 2-44. Pagination: (1) title, (1) blank, [3]-32pp. Amer. Imprints #12156. John De Witt (1789-1831) Reformed Dutch clergyman. He studied for a time at Union, but was graduated at Princeton in 1809. He then studied theology with Dr. Porter in Catskill and was licensed to preach in 1811. He held pastorates in the Reformed Dutch church at Lanesborough, Mass., and Albany, N.Y., until 1823 when he became professor of ecclesiastical history in the theological seminary at New Brunswick, N.J. In 1825 Dr. De Wit assumed also the professorship of belles-lettres, criticism, and logic in Rutgers college. The three chairs he filled until his death at age 42. We offer his sermon on regeneration, preached on the text of John 1:13 "Which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." It was published posthumously.
