Pamphlet in original printed paper wrapper, wrapper soiled some and is tattered at spine, worn and lightly chipped at corners, pamphlet with vertical crease, pages lightly tanning. 32pp plus a very nice two-tone engraving of the church for the frontispiece, and in the back a double page plat of the graveyard with names of original owners and present proprietors. John Chester Backus (1810-?) Presbyterian pastor, graduate Yale College, studied theology at New Haven, Andover and Princeton Seminaries. In 1836 he accepted the pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church, Baltimore, Md., retaining the charge until his resignation in 1875.

Thomas Brainerd, D.D. With an Account of the Festival, Sansom Street Hall, Feb. 17th. Philadelphia: William F. Geddes, Printer, 320 Chestnut Street. [1862] Octavo. Pamphlet in original printed paper wrapper, pencil call number on front cover and title, typed slip pasted inside front cover reads: "From the cornerstone of the North Broad St. Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia." This pamphlet came from the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia. Thomas Brainerd (1804-) Presbyterian pastor, of the same Brainerd family as the celebrated David & John Brainerd, missionaries to the Indians. Thomas was converted under the preaching of Charles G. Finney in 1825, graduated from Andover Seminary, pastored in Cincinnati 1831-37. In March 1837 he was installed over the Third, or Old Pine Street Church, Philadelphia, where he remained for the rest of his life, nearly 30 years. According to this sermon, he admitted a thousand communicants into the Old Pine Street Church.

Bound original full calf with black morocco title label, spine ends chipped away, rectangular 1x2cm piece leather chipped from top of spine, half-moon .5 x 2cm piece chipped from edge near middle of spine, spine leather dry and soft, leather split along hinges but with loose edges pasted back down, lower cord of front cover resewn into spine on outside of leather, covers tight, heavily rubbed and scuffed, worn through leather at corners, light to medium foxing. Bookplate of Rutgers College Library "Presented by the Philoclean Literary Society of Rutgers College." Oval red stamp on title "Philoclean Society, R.C." Pagination: (1) title, (1) copyright & printer, [iii]-v contents, (1) blank, [7]-308pp; last page number is mis-printed 803 instead of 308. Ezra Stiles Ely, 1786-1861, an Old School Presbyterian minister. "He graduated at Yale College in 1803. His theological Studies were pursued under his father, the Rev. Z. Ely. In 1806 he was ordained, and installed as pastor of the church in Colchester, Conn., which he left some time after to become chaplain to the New York City Hospital. In 1811 the Old Pine Street Church, Philadelphia, became vacant. Its pulpit had been filled by the most eloquent ministers of the day, and it was necessary to choose a man of commanding intellect and power. The choice fell most wisely upon Dr. Ely... He was the principal founder of the Jefferson Medical College. He was stated clerk and moderator of the General Assembly in 1825, and 1828, and was constantly engaged in works of charity and schemes of benevolence.
