Western Female Seminary was founded by people in Oxford, Ohio who wished to duplicate Mary Lyon's Mt. Holyoke Seminary in the West. They raised the necessary monies and property and then approached Mt. Holyoke Seminary. "They were asked to foster this young western daughter, to assist in making her a counterpart of their own institution, and to select the first corps of teachers from Holyoke ranks."
