Asahel Nettleton (1783-1843) "a well-known Connecticut evangelist... He never settled as a pastor with any congregation, but preached in Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York; in Virginia 1827-28; and also in Great Britain in 1831. Nettleton's hymnological work centered in the compiling of his Village Hymns [1st ed. 1824], from which more hymns of the older American writers have passed into English collections than from any other source. He knew and could appreciate a good hymn, but it is doubtful if he ever did or ever could have written one."--F.M. Bird in Julian: Dict. of Hymnology, p.794.
