Under the new arrangement, the Rev. J. W. Scott, D.D. being chosen President of the College, by joint action of the Synod and the Board of Trustees, was inaugurated on Tuesday, the 20th of September..." Contents include: Address by Rev. D. Elliott, Pres. of Bd. of Trustees; Administration of the oath of office by Pa. Chief Justice Jeremiah S. Black; Inaugural Address by J.W. Scott; and Address by Rev. C. Van Rensselaer. John Work Scott (1807-1879) Presbyterian pastor and educator. Pastoring churches in Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, he was also founder and Principal of the Grove Academy at Steubenville, Ohio (1836-47); Principal of Lindsley Inst. at Wheeling, Va., (1847-53); President Washington College, Pa. (1853-1865); Principal Woodburn Female Seminary and of the Academy at Morgantown, W.Va. (1865-67); then Professor and Vice-president of the State Univ. at the same place and for two years was acting president.
