Moses Stuart (1780-1852) American Hebraist & Biblical scholar, professor of sacred literature in Andover Theological Seminary 1810-1848. "To America he brought the knowledge of what was being done for Biblical scholarship in Germany, and thus founded in America the scientific study of Biblical archeology and linguistics. For his services in this department he has been called `the father of American Biblical literature.'"--New Schaff-Herzog Ency. Rel. Knowl., XI:116. The American Education Society was founded to help train ministers for America's new settlements. The reviewer criticizes the Society for requiring recipients of their aid to provide detailed accounting of their need, of the Society loaning the money instead of just granting it, that applications for aid must be made first through the Branch societies, questions over whether voting members of the Society are eligible for office in the Society thereby giving them power to perpetuate their own office. Stuart then lists fears that the reviewer has: fear of immense power that the Society will eventually gain, both financially and ecclesiastically with the Presbyterian Church. Finally, Stuart takes to task the reviewer for bringing up these objections in public: "I frankly confess, that I have a deep feeling on this subject... Shall the tocsin of alarm be sounded through the United States; and all the enemies of religion be set in motion, and have their mouths filled with matter of accusation against the American Education Society?...
