This sermon was preached in Newburyport the Sunday after the funeral of Moses Brown and again "by particular request," the following Sunday at Andover Theol. Seminary. Brown (1742-1827) a merchant and philanthropist, involved in the sugar & molasses trade with the West Indies and owner of several wharves, warehouses, distilleries as well as extensive real estate in Newburyport. He was a large donor to Andover Theol. Seminary. Leonard Woods (1774-1854) American Congregationalist minister, grad. Harvard 1796, pastor Newbury, Mass., 1798-1808; professor Andover Seminary 1808, made professor emeritus, 1846. "He was one of the founders of the Amer. Tract Soc., The Amer. Educ. Soc., Amer. Temperance Soc., and the Amer. Bd. of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He was a champion of orthodox Calvinism against the assaults of Ware, Buckminster, and Channing."--New Schaff-Herzog Ency.
