Bound publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, fraying at spine ends and corners, light yellow endpapers, light to medium foxing and tanning of pages. Inscription on front free flyleaf in old pen: "R. Swenarton from her friend Mrs. Hunter." Pagination: (1) title, (1) copyright, [iii]-iv introduction, [v]-vi contents, [7]-251 text, (1) blank. Stephen H. Tyng (1800-1885) clergyman of the Protestant Episcopal Church; a graduate of Harvard (1817), he studied theology in Bristol, R.I. under the direction of Bishop Griswold in 1819-21, after a number of other pastorates was called as rector of St. George's church, NY for over 30 years. "He was distinguished for eloquence in the pulpit, and also for able and effective temperance and patriotic addresses. For many years he was a leader among that part of the clergy known as low churchmen. He was active in organizing the Evangelical Knowledge Society, the American Church Missionary Society, and the Evangelical Education Society..."--Appleton's Cycl. of Amer. Biography VI:203. From Introduction: "I have only to say, the chapters herein contained, were so many distinct letters addressed to a friend who was the Superintendent of a Sunday-school, at his own request... They are the simple language of personal experience and observation in the field of which they treat." Contents include: "I. Personal History. II. St. George's, NY, Exercises and Plans for Schools. III. Failure of Teachers, etc. IV. Manner of Teaching... XXII. Duty of Schools to the Church. XXIII. Duty of Teacher. Catechism. The Bible..." There are 25 chapters in all.
