Bound plain leather spine with plain green paper over boards, recently rebacked with heavy brown acid-free paper over cloth hinge piece, rubbed & scuffed, boards soiled, worn through paper along edges, top of front free endpaper cut out, medium to heavy foxing, water stain on lower outside corner of most pages. Early owner's name written on rear free endpaper, "George Garden," His name stamp on front free endpaper. Modern bookplate of M.S. Carothers on front paste-down endpaper.

Collation: A-M6. Pagination: (1) title, (1) copyright, [3]-141pp, (1) blank, (2) ads. The American Sunday School Union edition is not listed in American Imprints, nor does a copy turn up on OCLC. The later locates many editions from the first in 1816 through 1828--published in either Elizabethtown NJ, Newark NJ, or Utica NY.

John M'Dowell (1780-1863) Presbyterian pastor Elizabethtown, NJ, 1804-1833; Central Church, Philadelphia, 1833-1845; and Spring Garden Church, Philadelphia, 1846-1863. The later church he founded at age 65. "1317 person were brought into the several churches to which he ministered on profession of faith... Dr. McDowell's life was so protracted that he had the opportunity of taking part in all the great institutions of the Church and benevolent societies. In 1820 he was made Moderator of the General Assembly. From 1836 till 1840 he served as Stated Clerk... Dr. McDowell's published works were a "System of Theology," in two volumes, "A Bible-class Manual," in two volumes, and "Bible-class Questions," the first of the kind ever used."--Nevin: Ency. of the Presbyterian Church, p.491.
