"To America he brought the knowledge of what was being done for Biblical scholarship in Germany, and thus founded in America the scientific study of Biblical archeology and linguistics. We offer Stuart's reply to Channing's famous sermon at the installation of Rev. Jared Sparks as pastor of the Unitarian society in Baltimore in 1819. In it "he [i.e. Channing] gave a clear statement of the points wherein he diverged from the orthodox churches of the time."--P. Schaff in New Schaff-Herzog Ency Rel. Knowl., III:3. Stuart replies in five letters to Channing.
