Bound publisher's original embossed maroon cloth with faded gilt lettering on spine, gilt eagle & shield on front cover, bottom half of original spine lacking but sometime partially rebacked with a piece of maroon cloth, heavily worn through original cloth on all edges of cover and with corners worn down, top of spine chipped away, original owner's name scratched out on front paste-down endpaper but remaining is "Bought in Raleigh Feb. 5th 1855," modern bookplate of M.S. Carothers on front paste-down endpaper, lacking 3cm strip along fore-edge of front free endpaper, endpapers soiled some, light foxing throughout, scattered marginal dampstains. Collation: 1-36. Pagination: (1) title, (1) copyright, [iii]-iv contents, [v]-xii preface, [13]-431pp, (1) blank. Howes C210. Sabin 11167. First Edition, first series.
