William Alexander Caruthers (c1800-1846). Born in Lexington, Virginia, he attended Washington College there, but did not graduate. With a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he practiced medicine in Savannah, Ga. until his death. He was one of the founders of the Georgia Historical Society. He published three novels all said to be somewhat imitative of Scott. The Cavaliers is based on Bacon's Rebellion or the Virginia Revolution of 1676, and centers around the activities of the Cavalier hero, Nathaniel Bacon and his opponents the Roundheads, led by Governor Berkeley.
