"Here is an early copy of one of our most important fall publications. Complete jackets are not ready yet, but we are sending this copy to you now because we want you to be among the first to read what we believe is one of the most powerful and truthful novels to come out of World War II. Face of a Hero by Louis Falstein will be published on August 17 at $3.00."--inside front dj. Stamped on front flyleaf: "Famous Artists Corporation, 9441 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, California." Louis Falstein was a aerial gunner in the 15th Air Force, winning the Air Medal four times. "The first war novel to picture air combat from the enlisted men's point of view."--jacket flap of the bound edition. Some critics have suspected Joseph Heller plagiarized this novel in his Catch-22, as they both have similar settings: both novels are set at the Mediterranean base of an American bomber squadron in World War II. Both focus on a wounded airman in a full body cast. However, both Falstein & Heller were Air Force veterans from Russian Jewish families in Brooklyn who served in Italy during the war.
