Bound full leather with black title label, leather splitting along top two-thirds of rear hinge, worn through leather at corners, rubbed & scuffed, marbled page edges, modern bookplate of M.S. Carothers, light foxing, dampstains on first 20 pages, 2 starts, paper repairs to first 20pp, dampstain in inner margin of last few pages, pencil scribbling on rear flyleaves and endpapers. With inscription on front endpapers: "C.W. Medlin, Cheraw, So. Ca." and also: "J.C. Medlin" of the same place. Pagination: (1) title, (1) blank, [iii]-v dedication, (1) blank, (1) contents, (14) woodcut plates, 1-384pp. Text printed within double ruled border William Paley (1743-1805) "Educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, where his unusual abilities, especially in mathematics, attracted much attention, he was elected Fellow in 1766 and soon became a much-sought-after lecturer...In 1794 appeared the first edition of the famous View of the Evidences of Christianity. Though its arguments added little that was new, the work became extremely popular from its effective presentation of the facts and its pellucid style. In estimating its external and somewhat mechanical view of revelation, it must be remembered that Paley shared this with his age.
