John Lemley was born in 1843 in Darmstedt Germany. His autobiography chronicles his personal struggles growing in poverty with an alcoholic & abusive father. He left home in NY state at age 10 and traveled to Illinois & Wisconsin working on farms. In his own words: "traced the changes that came over him, the calamities, misfortunes, abuse, his being driven out helpless and abandoned..." He eventually studied at Wesleyan Univ. in Middletown, CT and was licensed top preach in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was editor of the Golden Censor 1868-1877, a family religious newspaper devoted to holiness and the christian life. He also edited Zion's Watchman 1879-1881.
