This meeting and pamphlet came about because "It was announced early in 1872, that the Bishops of the Province of Canterbury would invite the Lower House of that Province to consider what method of dealing with the Athanasian Creed would tend to remove the difficulties which it was alleged were occasioned by its present use in the Service of the Church of England; a Committee of Clergy and Laity was therefore organized by the exertions of a few Laymen, and the following circular was issued to all the Parochial Clergy of England and Wales. 'Reverend Sir, We, the undersigned, beg leave to urge upon you very seriously the importance and necessity of obtaining the signatures of your parishioners to a petition, headed by yourself, to the Lower House of Convocation of Canterbury... in favour of maintaining the Athanasian Creed in its integrity in the Public Service of the Church." They ended up obtaining 38,000 signatures in favour of keeping the creed.
