James, Stereotyper, Cincinnati) 12mo, 12.7 x 18.8cm Bound publisher's embossed cloth with gilt title on spine, cloth has a number of tears and scuffs that have been pasted back down, spine ends chipped away and worn through cloth at corners, corners consolidated with flexible book adhesive, yellow endpapers, red library stamp on front paste free endpaper and verso of title page, light to medium foxing. 19th century printed bookplate with simple decorative border: "Private Library of Rev. Wm. Duncan. Please Handle with Care." There is also his name stamp on the front free endpaper which reads: Wm Duncan College Cor. O." Pagination: (1) title, (1) copyright, [3]-8 introduction, [9]-11 canons of interpretation, (1) blank, [13]-366 text,[367]-368 contents. Starr: Baptist Bibliography #CC1241. OCLC identifies this edition and an 1854 second edition. Starr notes an 1857 book titled just "Future and Endless Punishment" with 368pp. Reune Runyon Coon, 1815-1900, was an early and well-known Baptist minister in Indiana and Illinois, serving churches in both Peoria and Alton, Ill., amongst others. We offer his work written against Universalism: "It is the errors with which it stands connected which, measurably, if not mostly, estamps it with its most odious character. If the basis on which the system rests were the real atonement of Christ, applied by the gracious influences of the Holy Spirit--if such were the structure and relation of the system, to be it would seem much less hostile to the spirit and tenor of the Scriptures."--Introduction, p.7.
