The American Baptist Missionary Union was formed out of Adoniram Judson converting from Congregationalism to Baptist on his voyage to India in 1812. His need of support spurred a number of small Baptist missionary societies to form. These were consolidated in 1814 as "The General Convention of the Baptist Denomination in the United States of America for Foreign Missions. It was reorganized in 1846 after the Southern Baptist had withdrawn the previous year, as the American Baptist Missionary Union." This volume is record of the Union's missionary activities around the world in 1877-78, including Burma, India, China, Siam, Japan, and Congo & Uganda missions, as well as European missions in France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Finland & Russia.
