Joseph Seiss (1823-1904) Lutheran minister, author; "he was licensed to preach when only nineteen years of age and was ordained two years later. No other Lutheran clergyman in America has risen to prominence so early... After a year of missionary activity at Mount Sidney and Harrisonburg, Va., he was pastor from 1843 to 1847 at Martinsburg and Shepherdstown, Va. (now W. Va.), from 1847 to 1852 at Cumberland, Md., and from 1852 to 1858 at the Lombard Street Church in Baltimore...While in Baltimore he published several other books, carried on a lively, urbane controversy with the Baptist Clergyman, Richard Fuller In 1858, when St. John's Philadelphia, the largest English Lutheran congregation in America, sought a worth successor to Philip Frederick Mayer, Seiss was its unanimous choice... He was the most admired preacher of his denomination and its most prolific author, his publications extending to more than one hundred separate titles, besides numerous contributions to periodicals... "--Dict. Amer. Biog. XVI:564. We offer the third edition of Seiss' work against the Baptists. The much smaller 1st edition was published in 1854. The much larger 2nd & 3rd editions were published in 1858 and 1859. "The author has endeavored to ' speak the truth in love.' If comment has occasionally assumed a tone of severity, facts and fidelity not only excuse but demand it... The teachings of Baptist are full of the grossest assaults upon the Church and its ordinances, which, with out convictions, we are in duty bound to meet and expose... He [the writer] believes that Baptists are in serious error, and he would reclaim them if possible, at least check their misdirected zeal, by showing that material modifications of their system are essential to harmonize it with the truth."--preface, pp5-6.
