Henry Cowles 1803-1881, Congregational minister, professor, author. He was a graduate of Yale College and spent two Years in Yale Divinity School. He was ordained an evangelist in 1828. He served as pastor for congregations in Ashtabula, Sandusky and Austinburg before becoming professor of Greek and Latin at Oberlin in 1838 as well as professor of ecclesiastical history, church polity, and Old Testament language and literature. From 1848 to 1862 he was the editor of the Oberlin Evangelist. Along with Oberlin president Charles G. Finney & professor Asa Mahan, Cowles was involved in the anti-slavery work and Christian perfection teaching of the college. We offer his commentary on Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, & The Song of Solomon.
