"The First Catholic Bishop of Boston, missionary to Penobscot Indians, Principle founder of Athenaeum, friend of President Adams, Advisor to State Legislature; one of America's noblest priests."--headline from newspaper clipping. John Louis Ann Magdalen Lefebre de Cheverus (1768-1836) French Cardinal, came to Boston in 1796 after having refused to take the oath prescribed by the French Revolutionaries. He worked for a year among the Penobscot Indians and thereafter spent 3 months of with them yearly. When he opened a subscription towards building the first Catholic church in Boston, President Adams headed the list and remained his friend and well wisher for life. In 1810 he was created against his wishes, the first Bishop of Boston. When his health broke in 1823 he was given the see of Montauban, made a Peer of France, later Archbishop of Bordeaux and still later a Prince of the church. He never changed his mode of living. In the magnificent palace of Bordeaux he retained only only room for himself, using the palace as a hospital for the severest contagious diseases.
