First Edition. Horace Bushnell (1802-1876) Congregational minister and theologian. While considered forward thinking in some of his theological views, he opposed women's suffrage. In chapter 7 titled ""Probable Effects,"" Bushnell states: ""The look will be sharp, the voice will be wiry and shrill, the action will be angular and abrupt, wiliness, self-asserting boldness, eagerness for place and power will get into the expression more and more distinctly, and become inbred in the native habit (p.135). The active, campaigning work of political life is certainly in quite too high a key for the delicate organization, and the fearfully excitable susceptibilities of women(p.138). We also know that women often show a strange facility of debasement and moral abandonment, when they have once given way consentingly to wrong (p.142)"" Etc. (17135) "
