"Johann Georg Walch(1693-1775) professor of philosophy and then theology at Jena. He wrote extensively on theology and took part in the philosophic movements of his time. Though adhering to orthodox Lutheran doctrines, ""the dawning of rationalism may be discerned in his Philosophisches Lexicon, as well as his acceptance of natural theology.""--G. Kawerau in New Schaff Herzog Ency. Rel. Knowl. XII 238. ""He united with Buddeus in holding fast to the old Lutheran orthodoxy, though his reception of natural theology had destroyed the old theoretical basis of that orthodoxy; and, at the same time however, his views received an infusion from Pietism which prevented him from sustaining a hostile attitude toward the movement.""--McClintock & Strong: Cycl. Theol. Biblical & Eccl. Lit. X:854. ""Walch""s Philosophisches Lexikon appeared in four different editions in 1726, 1733, 1740 and 1775. It was the most important philosophical dictionary in the eighteenth century, at least in Germany. Several generations of philosophical scholars and amateurs used it and were influenced by it. Its influence on German thought from the beginning of the Enlightenment until the beginning of the period known as ""German Idealism"" cannot be overestimated. It is therefore an indispensable aid in understanding the philosophical terminology in Germany between the times of Wolff and Hegel""--Manfred Kuehn""s introduction to the Thoemmes reprint of the 1733 2nd edition, p. viii.
