"Robert Millar, 1672-1752, ""apologist and historian... Millar was the author of two essays in historical apologetics, A History of the Propagation of Christianity (2 vols, E, 1723) and A History of the Church under the Old Testament (E, 1730). In both, as an apologetic argument against the natural religion of the English deists, Millar attempted to demonstrate the course of providence in history by means of a chronology ordered and reinterpreted theologically. Millar's progressivist philosophy of history, derived from French and English Calvinist apologetics, is most apparent in Propagation."" Millar's ""combination of apologetic with progressivist eschatological and missionary motifs accounts for the wide influence of the work (Propagation) in the first half of the eighteenth century.""--I.D. Maxwell in Dict. of Scottish Church History & Theology, p.562. ""It was enormously influential among Scottish missionaries and has been called one of the formative influences in the eighteenth century by a leading historian of Scottish revivalism (Fawcett, 215). In 1730 Millar published in Edinburgh, also by subscription, his second major work, The History of the Church under the Old Testament... which may be seen as an extension of his earlier history of Christian conversion among pagans.--Richard B.
