"Francis Asbury (1745-1816) one of the founders of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America. At the onset of the Revolution he chose to stay in America, out of concern for those of the Methodist persuasion in the country. ""During his travels in North America, he preached an estimated 17,000 sermons of one hour or more and traveled over 275,000 miles. Under him the Methodist church grew from 15,000 members in 1784 to 140,000 members, stretching from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.""--Gordon, A. (2004, September 23). Asbury, Francis. ""In 1784 Wesley appointed Asbury and Thomas Coke joint superintendents, though Asbury insisted that his appointment be ratified by the Conference of Methodist preachers.
