"John Emory (1789-1835) Methodist Bishop. He studied law and practiced for one year when he chose to enter the Methodist ministry fulfilling appointments in Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, Washington & Annapolis. He was elected bishop in 1832, and died in a carriage accident in 1835. Emory had published A Defence of Our Fathers in 1827 at a time when ""the economy of the Methodist Episcopal Church was assailed by foes from within.""
